RECENT EVENTS:

AT&T gets caught red-handed claiming they are building new cell sites after the Alltel acquisition in the Farmington area. In an article from Cellular Noise, AT&T appeared before the San Juan County Commission, which has the local Building Inspector as a member, making the claim about new cell sites, only to find the Building Inspector had not received any building permit requests from AT&T...but has from their competitors.

The switchover of Alltel Wireless has created a new cellular dynamic in the Four Corners Region. Adding parts of the Alltel network has made Verizon Wireless coverage quite robust in almost all areas of the four states. In Arizona, the addition of Alltel's cell sites has improved AT&T's service in the Phoenix area, but little else. In New Mexico, AT&T gained a few areas of very much needed rural coverage. In Colorado and Utah, AT&T made substantial coverage gains with very good rural coverage.

The loss of the South Central Communications wireless network in the southwest section of Utah has caused some concern as they had some of the only cellular service in some Utah locations. For the time being, South Central, who still operates other communications facilities in the area, has kept these unique cell sites operating primarily for roaming customers of carriers like Verizon Wireless and Sprint. There has been no word yet if another company will maintain those sies.

Commnet Wireless has been building a substantial 3G wireless broadband network across the Native American properties, mostly in the northeast corner of Arizona. This network has the potential of providing the Navajo Nation and surrounding areas with substantially better broadband wireless coverage than other rural areas of the Four Corners region. This project received financial support from the Federal government as part of the President's broadband expansion plans.
